Ballooning in New Mexico - Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos?

santa fe new mexico
souj asked:

I am planning to do hot-air ballooning in New Mexico. What place and time of the day would be best? should I do it in Albuqueruque, Santa Fe or Taos? Also, what company is best?

It’s a surprise for my friend and any suggestions would be helpful.

Albuquerque - it’s the ballooning capital of the world. They start early in the morning. I don’t know any companies off hand.

Why did you post this question in Mexico section of travel? New Mexico is in the United States.

Uh??? And why are you posting this in the MEXICO section???

New Mexico is in the USA — at least it was there the last time I checked the map…………. no one’s gonna be able to answer as you’re asking this where people are giving advice about traveling to MEXICO, not the USA!

Santa Fe and Taos ofer the best scenery, but Alb. has the best conditions. Believe me, if it is your friend’s first balloon ride, it doesn’t matter the scenery so much. The “box” in Albuquerque usually offers the longest ride.

Go with rainbow riders, for the completely commercial experience. Their balloons are huge and the baskets handle up to 12 people (can you say, “moo”?). The envelopes of these ride balloons are like 200,000-plus cubic feet.
When you call, tell them you want to ride on a balloon that is 105,000 or less. That will ensure a more personal experience.

Otherwise try and find a more private operator with a smaller balloon. Two years ago, I would have taken you guys up myself. I’m always looking for crew. Now, Im in Oklahoma.

Another option is to wait until balloon fiesta and get on a crew.

Time of day is predetermined. Sunrise. Calmest winds and coolest part of the day.

Have fun. Fair winds
