Is it better to stop in Albuquerque or Santa Fe?

santa fe new mexico

I’m driving from Texas to Utah, and will be passing through New Mexico. I’m planning on stopping for a little bit when I’m there. Does anyone have any idea if it would be better to stop in Albuquerque or Santa Fe?

Visiting Albuquerque allows you to experience the authentic Southwest. One of the oldest cities in the U.S., Albuquerque boasts a unique multicultural heritage and history where Native American, Hispanic & Latino, Anglo and other cultural influences are a part of everyday life. You’ll always feel you’re someplace special when you’re eating at one of our traditional New Mexican restaurants, shopping at one of our more than 3,000 shops and galleries, or enjoying our world-class visual and performing arts or playing on the best golf courses in the Southwest. Nowhere is the confluence of past and present more dramatic than in Albuquerque, where the modern city skyline is set against a backdrop of the ancient Sandia Mountains and an endless, timeless blue sky.

If you only have time for one of them, do Santa Fe. Abq is a nice city — and if you were asking me where to LIVE I might say Abq, partly because it’s so much cheaper than Santa Fe — but Santa Fe is a far more unusual and memorable place to visit. Abq is a blended, downsized version of El Paso and Phoenix and Denver. There’s only one Santa Fe, and nothing else quite like it anywhere, at least in the US. Also Santa Fe is just plain easier to see and enjoy as a visitor. Park your car anywhere in downtown Santa Fe and you can easily walk to dozens of good restaurants, shops, galleries, clubs, historic sites, etc, etc. Don’t try Abq without your car and a map. Just for the record: Abq (founded 1701) is a youngster compared to Santa Fe (founded 1610).

Santa Fe is much better. Off the beaten path. Good travels..
