Restaurant recommendations in Albuquerque and Santa Fe?

santa fe
stlm asked:

I’m visiting Albuquerque and Santa Fe for 5 days and am looking for suggested restuarants for lunch and dinner while we are in town. Please post any favorite places to eat (the locals always know best!), and any particular dishes to try. Thanks a lot!

Check out this web site. It is written by travellers for other travellers. There are honest reviews on hotels and all sorts of other travel related things. You have more chance of getting an informed answer there to a very specific question like this.

In fact it has information on everything you will need for a trip anywhere!!

First search for the place you are interested in. Then go to the forum for that place and search again.
If you can’t find the answers you want you can post a question youself (just like on Yahoo Answers).

There is often “a local expert ” who will reply sometimes with extremely detailed answers.

Hi -

I lived in Albuquerque for a long time and miss the great New Mexican food now that I’m out in California. A good place for some food is El Pinto. You can get great New Mexican food and tasty margaritas for a decent price. Almost anything there is quite tasty! I’ll include a link to their website so you can get directions and whatnot from where you’re staying. Another restaurant that I miss is the Frontier. Although it looks like a scary dive, it has some good food. It’s right across the street from the University of New Mexico. A lot of students go there and be ready for security - there’s some type of security there due to previous acts of violence. Try their cinnamon buns/sweet rolls and green chile stew. It’s located on historic Route 66, so you really can’t miss it. Oh, there’s also a decent greek place right down too. I think it may have changed names since I was last there, but it’s right next door to a smoke shop.

Santa Fe has a different style of food - I guess you could say it has slight differences that set it apart. In Albuquerque, you can find good old fashioned New Mexican food, but in Santa Fe, there’s this big city feel where the food is fused with other styles or done differently. Anything off or near The Plaza will probably be busier since its near the tourist trap.

The one piece of advice I can give you is to avoid chain restaurants. There seems to be a lot of them there (i.e. Applebees, TGIFriday’s, Outback, etc.). The only local chain restaurant that I miss dearly and would recommend is Dion’s. They serve up some really good pizza and sub sandwiches (I’m drooling just thinking about it!). There’s several locations throughout Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, and I believe there’s even one in Santa Fe.

Oh, and when you’re at most of the restaurants, they will ask you “red or green?” This question concerns whether or not you want red or green chile on your food. Although I prefer green over red any day, try both!

Best wishes and have fun on your trip!
