What’s the best thing to do in Santa Fe, New Mexico and surrounding areas?

santa fe new mexico
Sam asked:

I’m going to be there during the last week of June and I was wondering what kind of fun things are there to do, as well as the surrounding areas.

The best thing to do there is go to Las Vegas. If you can’t go to Las Vegas, at least go to Albuquerque.

You could say that’s not doing something in Santa Fe. But at least it’s starting there.

Watch for the Santa Fe opera. It is about that same time(first show June 29-through mid August)
You will not find a single hotel room, and even personal homes are charging for a bedroom. Parking is nuts, prices are extra high, and if you are not a fan of Opera, stay away.
Hang out in the desert or camp in the mountains, visit indian ruins, and art galleries, but sleep somewhere else.
Good luck! It is a gorgeous town.

since I was born in Santa fe, I think I’ll give this question a try. Its true about the opera…..very busy, hotels are at a premium. You can always visit The Plaza, and see the goings on there. Natives selling jewelry, blankets, other trinkets. Georgia O’Keefe also had a place outside of Santa fe, as does Ted Turner, Jessica Lange, and others……who knows, you might spot a celebrity or 2. Also, if you like ghost towns or artist communities, visit Madrid, (great little town I lived there with granny for 3 years) visit Casey Jones museum. Also, don’t forget to look for jackalopes, but only at dusk and dawn
