Is it illegal to take pictures in Santa Fe, New Mexico? If so, why?

A friend told me when she went to Santa Fe, there were signs at the city limits that said all photography was prohibited unless you got a permit from the chamber of commerce.
So, what if I was there on my cell phone, and nonchalantly taking pictures?

No is not illegal….only in some government buildings, trasmport stations and areas not open to the public they can do that….you only need a permit if take picture with a commercial purpose, they do that because many commercial photographers and magazines used to set up their camps to take pictures without paying any money and the city had to clean their mess.

As a native of Santa Fe, it is true that alot of the Native American Indians that set up to sell thier wares at The Plaza, do not really like having pictures taken, as they believe that photographs take a bit of the “spirit” from them. (or so my grandfather told me, and he was an Indian Chief)
